2 The Introduction Part

After the introduction as below, I was asked to explain more on myself and on my books – and how I started writing.

Majid Al Suleimany, an Omani National, is a Human Resource and Management Expert and as a Professional, Advisor and Consultant with over 35 years of experience and exposure. He is also a Writer and has authored 5 books, 2 of which are in Management, with titled Psychology of Arab Management Thinking and A Cry For Help, and the other 3 books are a collection of his article writings, titled The Sequel, Short Takes and Between Us Only. He is married with 4 children, and his hobbies include Writing, Reading, Internet, Documentaries, Films, Meeting and Interfacing with People, and more.

3 How I started Writing

In short I stumbled into writing after going into Management Consultancy business after voluntary early retirement from PDO after 25 years of service. The business had collapsed – and beyond my controls and expectations – and after failing to get gainful employment in Oman went to work in Abu Dhabi in UAE.

I returned to Oman after my job was Emiratised – and again went looking for a job in Oman. In short that seems my story – I start to write more because I have no job prospects and opportunities.

I was writing since I was 14 years old – and my first essay My Most Vivid Dream won a National Prize in the 1960s in Tanzania, and was awarded by The Aga Khan himself on his visit to Tanzania. At the time I was in Aga Khan Secondary School in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

I wrote wherever I was – School Magazines, Company Magazines etc – and I was writing as a hobby more in Times of Oman in the column titled Give Me A Break (contributions from Readers).

The offer came to me from The Oman Daily Observer if I were interested to be a Columnist because at the time they were looking for Omani Writers with good levels in English Writings.

My column was born – and my first article was titled – More Dangerous and Troubled Waters Ahead – dated April 23 2003 – and after the Iraq invasion. I never stopped since – and writing every day.

The Interviewer - TAB – Tariq Al Barwani – reminded the listeners to see me every Sunday in The Oman Daily Observer under the column of Between Us Only!

(I did not talk of Muscat Daily Column At The Work Place because the column was no longer running here).

4 Explaining on My Books

Briefly you can get all the information here at www.majidbooks.com and www.alsuleimany.com

I explained how the ideas started to formulate after getting more hits and emails whenever I wrote on Office Related and Management articles compared to the other articles (Social, Economic, Socio-Economic, Life issues, Culture, Customs, Traditions, Behavioural, Teenagers issues, Marital Issues, Driving, etc – and rare cases of International Politics).

I then realised there was more potential and prospects here – and after my three books – Original – Between Us Only – The Sequel and Short Takes – mainly from my columns – but there were others too added in (original versions all and those ‘that did not make it’ for various reasons)!

Thus Psychology of Arab Management Thinking and A Cry For Help! were born.

See my websites for more information.

5 Management (and Related) Issues.

This is what I said (in Brief)

As Arabs and Muslims, work is considered as a very important aspect of our lives. A person who works hard is considered as if in worship in prayers. Then how come we are still behind the rest of the world?

Second thing – you should pay the worker before his sweat has dried! (meaning metaphorically on time as he does his work).

Was tempted to say more here, but remembered just in time that we were live on the air!

These are facts – and undeniable!

I had conducted myself a climate survey (Staff Morale Satisfaction) with the approval of my Business Unit Management Team (PDO).

In addition this is what I had found – Staff (including especially Omanis!) found themselves more committed, dedicated, appreciated and motivated during the times when they had expatriate bosses (mainly Europeans) then when they had our own Omani (Arab) bosses.

So what went wrong?

Challenged when was the survey (1995) and if still appropriate now? – I concurred that it was unfair, unethical, unprincipled (and everything else bad!) to generalise – because there are bad and good eggs in each basket – but the point still remains valid – and thus my two books published in 2009 and 2010.

(There were, indeed, some very bad bosses expatriates and in senior expatriate management as in A Cry For Help! – see www.majidbooks.com).

I was asked to explain myself more (keep remembering we were ALIVE on Air! – and TAB has a large following!

6 Learning To Saying No – Being Assertive and Affirmative.

I have written a lot on this subject.

Rather than taking your time I recommend to you to buy the two Management books – to explain myself and in defending my point. It was not easy I can tell you – because TAB did put me on the defensive on my points raised here (good of him though!).

Only I ended by replying if there was a solution I could recommend like his suggestions – of courses – and I said there were many Management Courses by all the Institutes even in Oman – and like Assertiveness, Team Building etc.

He, though, agreed with me that it was a fair point that going to courses was not the solution ‘if the horse still refused to drink the water’ and if there was no willingness to learn, change and transform oneself! If not – simply no point!

Beside the point of generalisations, to be fair to the Arab Manager it all stems from his culture and tradition ‘to be nice’ and ‘to be accepted’ – to be polite and not rude, crude and abrupt - and this will take some time – though he is not alone in this and there are some expatriates including Indians, British etc that behave like the Arab Manager (and the local opposite few cases).

It is noted that the Dutch and Germans are more straightforward (from my own bosses experiences).....

6 Advices to The Younger Omani Generation (Graduates).

Gave some live real examples and as also in both my management books.

For space will not add here – except that as per His Majesty speeches on the call of the youth to accept more challenges and training to prove himself as capable and for his own and family future and prospects.

I think I gave very good advices to The Youth here.

TAB was very complimentary.

In short to accept tasks and do them well – and to prove oneself – and if had an issue is to face it head on and not take the easy way of ‘switching off’ ....talk to your boss face to face pragmatically, openly, constructively and amicably to come to solutions that will work for both of you – and the benefit of the company and country too!

I threw in here the famous Kennedy expression – Do not ask what your country can do for you; but what you can do for your country!

We need to think more on the lines of our country than just our individual selves!

From The Board, The Omani Manager/Director and to The Omani Trainee (fresh graduate)

7 Misbehaving Expatriates ( F E W)!

I again stressed on Generalisations per sebut repeated myself in even spelling F E W (few) and a very tiny proportion (less than 2%) where the job and privileges have gone into their heads – and rise of my book A Cry For Help!

Again see www.majidbooks.com – though few they cause maximum damages by their negative outlooks, focuses, stereotyping against locals – and especially University Graduates and aspiring Managerial (and Senior) positions.

We need to address this situation before it worsens and goes out of hands (A Cry for Help! Book).

8 Anything Good in Arab Management?

Many things including the element of them being ‘more kinder and compassionate cum caring and feeling’ when it comes to discipline and especially losing jobs and terminations.

Challenged if this was a good thing – I ended by saying let us put it smugly – it is a ‘double edged’ sword – but the elements are all there (again generally speaking here).

9 More on The Books Again (Future)

See www.majidbooks.com and www.alsuleimany.com

I explained that the books were available at Family Bookshops, Borders, Turtles (WH Smith – New Stores) in Oman – and UAE at Magrudy’s and Jashanamal.

I explained on my need to launch my books rest of GCC and especially The Arab World – but lack the finances and support.

I explained on my sixth book writing now – A Novel – Sinking Deeper.

I want to be remembered as one who had contributed to society and in Management – not only in Oman – but the rest of the world - as my next project (Inshallah – God Willing – Amin Amen) of a very good Management Reference Book taking it from the two books as the start – and concentrate more generally and for references.

It was a good opportunity for me and thank Tariq Al Barwani and Rym Al Aoudia for this – and my son Fahad Al Suleimany for organising it.

Incidentally Fahad is also coincidentally arranging for A Road Safety Campaign under NAWRAS Sponsorship and with ROP and The Ministries concerned.

My Articles The Land Rover Story – What Is Happening To Us Now and Good Ideas – But Bad Implementation etc. were all written over 7 years ago on my apprehensions, concerns and worries then – and now writing it all over again 7 years on - and on the very same. No doubt it being that very insightful and revealing then and even now more too!

After my Consultancy business went into a tail spin and finally kicking the bucket, I tried to get jobs but I was also met with Sorry Sir – You Are Over 50! - as in the same series 7 years ago. Then this good newspaper offered me a column to write in English – as they heard I like writing! I never looked back – and 5 books on and with 2 in Management I am still writing – and now in 2 Newspapers in Oman too!

When I wanted to publish my First Book Between Us Only! - I went to all the influential centres and including my Bank too – but the doors were shut right in front of my face – including bolting the windows too from the inside! Until today I do not know why – and nobody had the guts and courage to tell me. Is it because of what I write? Or is it because of me as a person – that you do not like me as I am and what I look to you? Or is that just mean streak, hyperbole, hypes, jealousies, polarization and envies that some of us are famous of - or what?

Then one Oil Company Executive (Omani) coincidentally and incidentally who liked my writings supported me in Publishing costs of the book – though Marketing and Advertising was left to my Pension Salary – and that too taken almost by The Banks due to my failed business – and to avoid more legal and financial tangles already met.

If anybody ever again came to face me and told me to use my God Given skills, talents, education, innovation etc in being Self-Employed again or as an Entrepreneur I would dare to confront that person by being threatening to be rude and blunt and ask him to go away from me. Allah Gives His Human beings Rizq (Income) and I used to get now and then Temporary Jobs to push my life forward – and published 4 other books on my own accounts - without a single Baizas from anybody else! That is how determined I am in wanting to make it for myself! Sometimes we humans think we are God and control other peoples’ lives, destiny, future and prospects – but that just puts us just in The Sinners List only!

After my First Management Book, I tried to test the waters again to see if things have changed after reading all the stories going around – but nothing much did. Only the Bank was ready to help to a certain extent – so long as you are not a risk to them. It was all based on you as a Customer with what was left of your pension mainly – and nobody was ready to give you that break and opportunity to look at things on The Big Picture side that here was an Omani (GCC and Arab) Author who had managed to write 5 books and 2 in Management – the later that definite would contribute to Arab Management, Development and Research in our part of the world – and towards Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Talents and Human Resources Development of our Nation - and The Arab World (and Others) in particular and in special reference!

Especially in Arab Studies, Research and Development – taking the note that this is a First Time such books have been written in such a unique and special way based on the Author’s personal experiences, anecdotes and exposures.- as a Human Resources Professional – and Management Expert, Advisor and Expert.

Perhaps because I am an Omani and an Arab Author – and as I have said too in my articles But It Is In My Nature, Not Valuing Our Own, and There Is No Urgency – but if I were different everybody would come out to help and assist. Even the books on rocks, butterflies and wild plants fare better with all the Press Coverage and High Profiles launching their books. These things will not just disappear and go away – But It Is In My Nature! - That is our Curse! And Within Ourselves! Or Do Not Cry For Me! Or still – Valuing Our Own! Articles!

Actually, I was talking with my Bookshop In charge and we were discussing options for my books with them display – and the rather dismal sales. Then I was complaining about the lack of support extended to Omani (Arab) Authors and I volunteered maybe because I write in English? He said to me that you are not alone – and there was an Omani lady who writes in Arabic – but she too is all out there without any support, help or assistance – and she even tried more than me to get these but all futile and wasted efforts and time!

My Management Books are perhaps critical – but factual based on Realities of Personal Experiences, Exposures and Anecdotes of a Human Resources and Management Expert, Professional, Advisor and Consultant - stretching over 40 years in duration. The intention is clear - to build and remedy – through deep self-analysis, soul searching and objective cum analytical approach – for this generation – and for the future specially! There is NO INTENTION to penalize or hurt anybody – nor to take revenge on anyone – because I did not spare even myself in this!

Thankfully there is still some humanity and feelings out there – and some did come out to help and assist – this I cannot deny – otherwise I am not a Believer and am an ungrateful and unappreciative person. The few newspapers like this one covered all my books in reviews – and so did The Publishers too – they too were impressed and proud that I had gone to them to publish my books with them. They admitted too on this - The First Time and the specialness and uniqueness of the books – and shocked and disappointed too to get my feedbacks of NO REAL ACTION and DEEDS and LIVE ACTION – But Just Rhetoric, Empty Words and lot of Hype!

We then see all the things happening all around us, The Haiti Earthquake and other Natural Disasters – but nothing moves us or scares at all as if these things that they will not come to us again – we have eyes but do not see – we have ears but cannot hear – and we have mouths but we dare not speak! And my head is all hurt by banging it against a brick wall!

Last two days I was so unhappy, despondent, sad and disappointed – and I think depression was setting in. I have now even tried other AGCC countries in funds that help the Third World and Others – but in hope of their own too – or as they say charity begins at home – not to others! But then I realize I have been in these same waters 7 years ago – why did I not learn the First Time – and maybe it will be repeated again 7 years on too! NOTHING HAS CHANGED!

You will forgive me for being cynical, skeptical, and sarcastic – I have just given up now! My head hurts all over!!

Take Care!

*** I am very proud about you and the books. Truly an inspiration to us all in the family and the whole country too – My Daughter.

*** Dear Brother Majid = Seeing you in your Site, I guess you have been too busy with little time for a hair cut. I just hope you are not giving up on life... It is not you and it is not in your character to give up. You are a survivor. – Omani Colleague and Friend

*** Sir – you will find a place of pride in our hearts and souls – you are “touching lives globally”! Thank you for being so honest and humble – Indian Fan.

*** You should not be surprised for lack of support and assistance to your books - It is all due to The Books Contents. Simply put, we live like ostriches with our heads in our grounds - whilst everything around us are breaking and crumbling up - but Let sleeping Dogs Lie is my New Motto... You write as a Hobby ... and one day History will take your place to see that your works are published ...not only in Arabic ... but several others too. By that time it will be too late for everyone.....Mark my words...So JUST DO NOT GIVE UP – A Very Good Friend (Personal Advisor).

*** We were really excited for your new website, it had so much potential! – Web Designer

*** Dear Majid - Wish you all the best; I know you can make it. Take care and regards to all - ex Lady Work Peer.

*** We as Arabs in The GCC cannot expect any 'mercies' from The Expatriates Mafia Lot especially – and thus the theme of your books. But how many want to know the real truth? They prefer to push the dirt just under the carpet!

But the youth even in GCC are aware and knowledgeable, and even if you wanted, you cannot stop what has already started now.. But I do not blame them – I blame our own who put such Expatriates and the Weak of our own as Decision Makers amongst our midst. The cinder fires are burning underneath - and they will surface up one day.

The Losers will be everybody!

The Truth is coming out ... and this boat of yours is already out to sail. If it was of a lesser subject like Butterflies of Oman or GCC - it will be supported - especially if The Author is Non GCC!!

I am sorry to be frank and open to you ... but only REAL and TRUE friends can stand up and tell you THE TRUTH ... before we all lose... and a good thing has gone to waste... Please Do Not Give Up – May God Be With You Amin - Another Very Good Friend!

Salam Aleikoom Majid - Please accept my sympathy, I know how you feel, I went through, some of the same emotional feelings, as you know we still have discrimination in our society, among ourselves, even though our great religion teachings, ask us to treat each other fairly equal, but as you know the teaching of Islam is something great and our practice of Islam is something else!!

My advice to you, is to be cool, and always pray to ALLAH, and ask ALLAH for help, not the people, that what I do, after that, ask people to help, also

Also do not give up, try…. Try…. Try… ALLAH will send you Rizek… Amin - And from Him only! - ALLAH Bless you and your beloved family – A Very Good New Found Friend!

Thank you for being honest and humble Yes Sir – I am the same xyz in Mathematical equation. You have an elephant’s memory – Masha Allah (God Bless). Weaving a web of Magic by your command of language. Blessed to be in Oman – Indian Fan.

My friend you are wasting your life here. Move over to UK USA or even Australia! So long as you write in English and with your background, nobody will bother or care about you …. You will die broke and poor … and not only they will not buy your books, nobody is going to appreciate your contribution to society and country in especially human resources, management, education and knowledge etc.
Also people do not want the Truth to be told. A Good Friend.

A’Salam A’laikum !!

It was nice to go through your column and could well appreciate and empathise with you – more so from an HR perspective, being from the same fraternity.

You hit the nail on the head, as it is a question of "perception, attitude and approach" that matters and influences these situations.

No human resource can be written off or reject merely on the basis of mental models or hearsays. It is the role of HR to be the catalyst in the organisations and to build confidence on both sides of the table (managers and subordinates), to build capabilities in Omani and expats, bring in development and change in the mindset of expat managers.

Some "professionals" in their zeal to achieve and over achieve, would differ to carry on with anyone who (irrespective of nationality) is unable to cope up or does not come from a similar fast paced, dexterous back-ground, but the true professional leader shows his leadership to make this ordinary team member do extra-ordinary things....

Yes, HR has a tough task to change the mind set of such Managers,
but there are ways and means of bringing such manager around.

It depends upon what role or business space is HR allowed to operate in, within the organisation. If not allowed, HR has to slowly create that value by its actions, deeds and support to business and its people. Experience shows that when Omanis talent is properly highlighted and shown as really good talent for business, such managers are put in their places...

It is a change which has to be led by HR in all organisations...
Best Regards - Indian Friend

Article - Omani Authors Lack Support! - See Here in Pages.

Thank you for your Present of Psychology of Arab Management Thinking Book. You really talk deeply and with great understanding to human nature – you are lucky to be you and every word you say is making great sense and meaning. I really think you are smarter than doing an Office work only – I will continue to pray for you that greater things come your way – Amin - Omani Senior High Official.

From A Very Good Friend And Supporter - Dear Bro. Majid - If Omani Authors are supported, so it is an indication that we have a huge change in thinking !!! >> Change is always the hardest or reluctant to happen due to dominant thoughts of resistance to change !!! - May Allah Opens for you all gates of his care and may Allah send us miracle towards changing these dominant thoughts - AMIN.

From A Very Good friend and fellow Omani Publisher (in Arabic!)

I too had a very rough time publishing books ..... (Details of books and local raw treatment received deleted ).... The only local bookstore that accepted it is Family Bookstore, and publishers around the Gulf were not keen to test it. It was much easier to go with proven western writers – and even their translate works into Arabic than risk a book written by someone from the Arab world. Publishers in Lebanon and Egypt, however, encouraged me, and asked me to write a series.

So we clearly live in a 3000 km of no book zone, people simply don’t read, and when they do, it is fictional trash and not necessarily high end literature or even what interests their kids, and God forbid that they trust an Arab for giving advice on business practice.

So please do not be too disappointed.

It is true that if one does not spend or find sponsors for the first 1000 books sold, it’s going to be very hard to sell the idea to local publishers. So my suggesting to you is to target big name Egyptian and Lebanese publishers, and translate your book in Arabic. The numbers in Egypt alone justify your trouble. Kind regards - God Bless.________________________________________________________________

These are great books in my opinion and having seen the contents, there is a lot to learn. Mabrook and God Bless you – Omani Senior Bank Official.

Thank you for the support - I will read the Books Information Details that you sent and will send you my views – Omani General Manager (Lady).

I read your emails, and am interested in helping you publish your valuable books, please do not feel bad about the general in publisher behaviour, since you wrote a book in Psychology of Arab Management Thinking, and so by now you should expect the positive and negative respond. I think it is good idea to translate these books to Arabic, will it be possible to give your approval for the translation? I will forward your request to interested publishers here and hoping to find positive respond – UNESCO AGCC Senior Official.

Thank you for the Book Coverage article. It's very nice and well written synopsis of the book. All the best. Yours Brother – Omani Ex Work Peer
________________________________________________________________

I read your article then I read it more slowly the second time.
It is sad but not surprising (for you not to get the support you need as An Omani Author – despite all the Press Coverage on SMEs and Human Resources Development!).

Writers all over the world have experienced and continue to experience the same dilemma. And the sad truth is people do feel jealous of those they know. Normally there are more readers for English books then Arabic.

Pick up any Arabic book and you will see that the number of copies printed is often less than 1000. And as for books on human behaviour sciences, or the sort of stuff you write, I doubt if there could be more than a handful of readers. As a friend I would advise:

Do not give up, be persistent.

You enjoy writing so keep on the good work. Forget about making money from writing.

No one has made money from writing except ex-presidents and the like.
Look for support outside your country, i.e. Europe and the USA, using the Internet as a tool to approach.

Above all do not get disheartened.

The attached poem which I composed a couple of years ago is an indication of the true nature of human beings.

Good luck and best regards my friend. I miss you and I miss your jokes and laughter. Here is a joke to cheer you up – Ex Work Peer (And Very Good Friend – Omani)

Thank you so much for the book present - I am really happy that I see you yesterday. I am a very shy person – but your gesture really touched my heart. I am very happy to have known you! Brother Majid, - Thank you for the book and surely will visit the site. – Omani Engineer General Manager

Dear Majid (!)

I think if your finances were in order you would not have this problem (of wanting Financial Support), why do you always blame others for your problems?
I think that is the main issue if you really know where the problem is then you would solve it , but please stop blaming others – Regards (!)
From a Deputy General Manager Bank (Omani)

I am calling to thank you for dedicating that article to me in your book. I talked to my husband and told him that here is a person with great feelings, touch and humanity – and who cares for people – and always wants to help others as much as he possibly can. He read my article – and he agreed with me.

After being so sick, and your such nice and comforting words to me – I feel great to have known you in my life – and I will always remember this great honourable kind gesture to me so long as I live.
I am now getting better – thanks to friends like you! God Bless You and Your family – Amin – Omani Secretary Ex Company (Sick). ________________________________________________________________

1- I am an independent Polish Journalist preparing a text on Oman for one of our daily papers. So far I have had a pleasure to visit your beautiful country twice. With great interest I read your text Why Omanize? in Muscat Daily (Mon, 4 Jan 2010). Do you think you could send me links to other recent publications on the subject? Your text in Muscat Daily I read while being in Oman. I would be very grateful for your help.

2- Many thanks for your prompt reply and the webpage - a real goldmine of information. Need time to digest it all, - Polish Journalist (on visit to Oman).

Looking forward as always to immerse myself in your A Cry for Help! and to shed a tear or a bucket full. Hope you have bared it all - Frank & Forthright - the usual Majid way . Fortune always favours the brave – A Great Indian Fan.

Greetings, I cannot forget you, which is something next to impossible!!!! Specially a person who has given so many wonderful adjectives which I definitely do not deserve. I can just remember one old saying Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder; it’s your wonderful thoughts that make me a good secretary. People like you make my life worthwhile. God bless you all and keep you happy and safe. May almighty fulfill all your wishes and keep you away from all evil. – From An Indian SecretaryThank you Majid, You too, May ALLAH, Support, you – Amin.

I am not a writer, but I faced difficulties in life, I will try to write something to you, so you can elaborate and write it in a better way - Thank you – NGO Official (Qatar)

Dear Majid - I want to tell you what I think and what is in my mind. I try to find out the answer to this critical fundamental question as to why your excellent works are unappreciated and unrecognised. In my mind the possible answer has to be because of what you are and your writing in English (putting it delicately!) but I think more is what you are writing which to many would prefer that you did not and push the dirt under the carpet - or not to be said. Your style of saying things in truth and calling a spade a spade irritates and upset many.

For example, I see Press and Media coverage of other products on lesser issues - or even on National Ones your name is not incorporated because they have no trust and confidence in you and what you may write! This part is very sad and unfortunate.
I find that though you too are a qualified professional experienced Omani with expertise etc that our country needs - you are still without a job or assignment - despite all the talks of Human Resources Development!

Like I have talked to you before, one day your works will be recognised - but may unfortunately be too late for you my friend - like the other great Authors, Artists and Scientists. Should one give up - surrender and join the majority ignorant follow-the-tide group. Certainly I cannot see that in you Majid.

My advice is to remain astute and resilient - and do not give up!

They may play all dirty games against you to make you seen to be bad - or to weaken your resolution, will and determination.

Just Do Not Give Up! - Because Allah is with good kind and considerate people like you - and speak out the truth for good purposes and intention. Allah Maak! -- Omani GM (A Good Friend)..

Thank you very much for these sad stories but they do teach us a lot, I wish my grandchildren could read them. But reading stories or books are very rare with the modern day children, they waste a lot of time in texting, Twittering or Facebook etc. What a pity!- An Ex Colleague.

Thanks Majid .- Good sense of humor and you always write what you face in your day to day real life – A Relative (Friend).

The unique qualities on Man render him personally accountable for his actions ........ It is thus incumbent upon each individual to utilize carefully and responsibly his intelligence and his freedom of choice to come to the TRUTH ... I hope your portfolio of literature will add to your endeavor to seek the Truth only ... one MUST speak the TRUTH at whatever possible costs to One ... This is Highly Recommendable in Our Religion ...May Allah SWT Be With You - and Protect and Preserve you from all mischief makers and evil peoples - Amin.- A Great Muslim Scholar and Preacher

Do you need more?

All The Best Wishes and Regards,

Hi Pa,

I wrote an article about my idols here at our Company Newsletter
(It is a two month newsletter) here’s what I wrote about you.

M.S. (Always lands on his feet)

No matter how many times this man falls, he always seems to land on his feet. Every time he falls, he comes up even stronger, and once he gets up, the whole world knows about it. I remember when I was a kid, my dad had a small [party for his early retirement, and I heard a conversation between two big shots at PDO.

One said , “Do you think he shall be back?’.

The other replied, “Well no matter how many times we punch him, he gets stronger and stronger”.

I loved that moment

Be proud and never give up…… you are on top of the world! - From My Son

Thank you for the very emotional article Goodbye; Our Mother!

I am very sorry about your mother.. I can understand your feelings. I am crying with you! Loosing a parent is not easy. But loosing mother is something different. It is very difficult to stand. As being a mother myself, I wish my daughter to remember me in love, and pray for me after I die. I do not want her cry for me a lot. I always want to see her happy.
I suggest you add this article to your coming New Book (DONE). It is very emotional and heartbreaking – and it will make many people really cry – hopefully some will remember their parents before either they or their parents pass away first – and that will be your contribution - A Turkish Lady Fan (Turkey).

Dear Majid – your highly emotional article on Goodbye; Our Mother – made many of us cry here at the Offices! A friend of mine had not talked to her Mother for the last 5 years due to a family row over her divorce with her ex husband. I asked here to read your article – and say who the Writer is? It shattered them to pieces to realise that it was an Arab who writes that well in English.
She took two days off – and went to visit her sick ailing Mother.

If this is the affect that you have on people, no wonder you are greatly admired.

We at Trafford Publishing are Proud that you are our Author and have published your books with us – Book Consultant – Trafford Publishing USA.

MORE ADDED – January 27 2010.

Thank you for the sent article. It's very nice and well written synopsis of the book. All the best! – Omani Ex Work Peer

A friend to all, an enemy to none, honest, innocent and generous – that’s our Majid ! – Colleague in a Renown Company.

I feel that it feels great to read his human interest stories … The facts, which were objectively outlined, need to be studied in finding a solution to the many problems that haunt families today …must have made a lot of families think twice before getting into certain troubles that lead to disaster …. Such human-interest articles are exactly what we readers are patiently waiting for. Carry on the good works” – by Omani Lady Fan - Muscat – Letters to the Editor – Oman Daily Observer – 15th August, 2003.

I have read a similar article also named Touching People In Life! - and it was completely different. Personally, I agree with you more, because this article makes a little bit more sense for me’’ – Overseas Fan (France)

In all my life I have yet to see a person who can be very polite, courteous, kind and feeling at least 95% of the time – and treat him well and he will get the moon for you! Treat him abrupt and bad – and for the 5% he can be the most disliked despicable person that you had ever known – though admittedly he will try his best to avoid a face-on fight and confrontation – Ex Dutch Boss!

Majid - If we don’t comment on what you are writing it doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate, no, me my self I believe and enjoy every word you write. The incidents you are talking about have occurred in front of our eyes and have seen people suffer for what they have done.

But Majid do people learn from that?. Everyone says "he is stupid. It will never happen to me. If I were him I would...." and they continue with the same what others have suffered from.

Yesterday,. I watched Oprah show and she explained that it is the brain that makes people act the way they act in spite of seeing it is wrong. I’m confused Majid how can we help people we love and surrounding us into seeing things differently? Does power and money change people attitudes or they just unveils them to show their original beings?

Do write we will read. Thanks for forwarding me the nice pieces. I enjoy them. Good bless you - Omani Lady Fan

The writer takes ‘a no hold approach’ in many of his writings with an outlook from a personal perspective, fresh and in a retrospective view and in examples and experiences – something new and refreshing in Oman – Omani Head of Human Resources and Development

I read your article, and it made me real cry. I gave it to the wife, and she too cried with me. Thank you! We both needed that cry to unwind! Now there is love in the air! – CEO (Indian).

What The Books Reviewers Had Said

Here is an Author who calls a spade a spade – Features Editor – Oman English Daily.

The book is highly recommended for those in interests to have short stories of lives in Oman and The GCC countries – Another Features Editor – Another Oman English Daily (Book Short Takes).

Majid al Sulaimany is a well-read, witty and prolific writer who often makes you laugh and sit up and think on ordinary but often neglected and not so cared matters in the society. He also writes about social evils prevalent in the society with a funny touch and lashes it with heavy blows. This unique style and way we rarely find in other writers. His prose is simple and clear and elegant
The title itself tells the reader the topics he talks about are not so sweet many times, and many of the articles irritate somebody or other.

Since it is ‘between us only’ and whispered in to your ears he often talks about matters which many are scared to touch. Majid’s “Between us Only” is a sincere attempt by a simple human being who cherishes his culture and traditions, and wanted it to be preserved for the coming generations.
It is a labour of love with keen observation of the society in the 21st century Arab world in particular. It also carries warnings, resentments, fears and advises for all.-

The Features Editor – Oman English Daily (The Sequel Book).

It is part of personal thoughts of the Author on the day-to-day happenings in the society, part satire, part analytical, but in the long run, it does really matter – it is cautionary and advisory. It is the second book on the same line, and while it is overdone at times, it is still a fun reading enjoyable experience.

In his impressive style, Majid skilfully combines the pride and prejudices of the society, love and hate, vanity, pomp and show with a mixture of elements of caution to show that somewhere something is lacking and eventually leaves the readers to find out the answers.

No, he is not copying anyone’s style, it’s his own personal genre, and fortunately for us, he does it well! He also deals publicly with more serious aspects of culture and social life. It provides a point to ponder, people should believe in it.
Whatever others may think, his intentions seem to be very plain – love your country, love your culture and love one another.
Where he is right is in underlining the fact that some people are encouraged by elites who take ludicrously short-sighted decisions which in the long run costs the people dearly.

Highly recommended reading for all.

Another Features Editor – Another Oman English Daily (The Sequel Book).

Majid has a very interesting and straightforward way of putting things.

Another interesting aspect of Majid's writing style is that he can explain most burning complex and contemporary issues in a few sentences with unqualified clarity of thoughts

Another Features Editor – Another Oman English Daily (Between Us Only Book).

Written in a frank, open, and honest approach, Majid exposes his personal viewpoint on the critical realities found in the book. A must-read first-time book written by an Arab (GCC) Management Author and with the aim and focus for improvement in the especially Arab Management process – International Reviewer (USA)

Demonstrating his sharp eye, value for culture and tradition, and fearlessness, acclaimed columnist Majid Al Suleimany continues to uphold the witty bravado found in all his books so far – International Reviewer (Canada)

It is a unique book, written in a unique style. It is a soul-searching and critical evaluation of one’s own people in the field. He extols the culture and importance of work in his religion and the pitfalls and lackluster attitude of the Managers in position about the Principles and Process of Management.” - -

Extracts From My Book - A Cry For Help!

January 12, 2010.

EXTRACTS FROM A CRY FOR HELP BOOK!(See Here)

D.02.03 – Before you came……!

This is a live example, and had happened five years ago.

I had taken over from one Indian as The Human Resources Manager as per the country’s laws and regulations for these jobs to be reserved for Omani Nationals.

This incident is covered in The Psychology book too – but in brief I was the only Omani in Senior Management then. The rest were majority Indians followed by British, American etc. There were Junior Omani Managers too, including one who was my Assistant.

This guy thought the job would come to him automatically – but did not. An adversary was born (and used and utilized by The Mafia Groups of Expatriates
against me).

Then one Finance Director from Dubai (Indian and a friend of the departed Indian HR Manager) came and said in the starting meeting. Mr. M, when the British Manager is not here, we run the meetings in Hindi! To loud uproars and laughter of everybody – including my Assistant Omani peer (he spoke Hindi as per the Omani ethnicity mix).

I felt very bad. Then I said to them – if you want you can continue the meeting in Hindi – but I will not be around to contribute. Including my Department – staring at my Assistant!

They still did not get the message – until the next day The CEO based in Dubai – a good American kind gentleman drove all the way at night to come early morning to hold an Urgent Meeting.

He cancelled all The Senior Managers meetings and schedules. He had heard from others what had happened in the meeting!

He told them very strongly and warning note – M is a citizen of this country. We are a foreign company operating under their auspices. So we must behave and conform, adjust and respect and esteem the Nationals of this country.

Turning to me he said – M, I apologise on behalf of what was said. You should have informed me instead of hearing it from others. From now on – if anyone misbehaves, let me know – and he or she will be out of this company and country before they know it! That includes you too (to my Assistant).

Did it start off badly? You can say it again! But I was not the one that had complained to The CEO (they said to me in unison – it was meant to be a joke – but you took it all wrongly!).

I had no problems after this. My American CEO was a hero to this day, even after leaving the Company 9 months later when all the expatriate Mafias were at me. And especially when I started recruiting more Omanis, and promoting some too.

To the day I left my Omani Assistant was an adversary. My position was filled in by another Omani – not him. Still the message had not sunk into his thick numskull! He still thought he should have been selected.

The troubles and innuendos he caused me in addition to the Mafias made me in the end resign and leave the place.

You can say from the frying pan to the fire – giving rise to my book Psychology of Arab Management Thinking after joining The Chinese Company (Hong Kong).

If we had more peoples like this good American CEO, perhaps there would have been less demotivation, depression, frustration and disappointments – especially in the Omani workforce. That is for sure.

And certainly my two books – Psychology of Arab Management Thinking and this one A Cry For Help would not have come into being – and perhaps less chapters in the Original Book Between Us Only, The Sequel – Between Us Only and Short Takes – Between Us Only too!

Many of the Chapters are related to work related issues and relationships between FEW misbehaving erratic Expatriates (including Management echelons and ladders too) and now the increasing traumatic experienced locals and the FEW that are turning to Religion for solace and comfort

– and as a resultant increased radicalism, fundamentalism, extremism

– and lack of tolerance, forbearance and live and let live syndrome – either by results as a tandem and related – and more worrying if not at all linked and or related!

D.2.011 - Tell Me Who Is Writing For You?

In the last company I worked for (See Introduction) this British workmate sidled to me and whispered to my ear. Tell me a secret – he said – and like in your column in the newspaper Between Us Only! Who is writing these articles for you? And you just use your name added to it? I think it must be one of the Indian Journalists – and either he owes you a favour or you pay him?

Besides the point that he raked bad mouth smell (was eating before), I was stunned by the accusation and incrimination. So sheepishly cowardly and docilely, I said to him – No I write them myself!

So he asked me – how long does it take you to write your column? So I said maybe 20 minutes at the most. Ok he said to me – if I give you a topic, will you write for me? Or better still – you choose the subject – and I will sit here and watch you do it! So – what will you write about?

Really agitated and furious, I said I will write on (topic depleted by Author – unprintable!) – and he got up and said – I think I deserved that. At least humanity strikes in – few minutes later he came to apologise. I should have known better – I did not know you were educated and trained in the British systems and methods – no wonder your English writing is better than even mine.

Forget the point that he was British himself, and he was by grade more senior to me. Then I politely accepted and added – I have already published 4 books (in English). How many have you? – None – he said – I am sorry.

This problem I even experienced 20 years back – when I made a corporate policy proposal – my boss then remarked crudely – tell the guy he did a good job! At that time still young and less confident – I just gaped – and docilely and weakly said Nothing!

D.3.2 – Tell Me All About It!
(What Else Is New?).

After my last article in my column, which was titled At Your Service,
I got many angry and upset emails from some young Omanis
especially.

One works in the Marketing field, another in Insurance and Investment. I picked these two as the best of the lot, the most acrimonious upset and angrier lot. I am repeating them as sent, of course without revealing the identities, so here goes anyway!

(From A) - Tell me about it! (Sad caricature!) –

Your article this week M - It is very discouraging and makes me mad pissed off angry! My boss is an Expatriate and his boss is also an Expatriate, they treat us very bad. After several years of getting Superior Performance in my Staff Appraisals, this year I got just Satisfactory.

I didn’t panic or anything cuz my sister just passed away and I was sick for a long time - and I was like “what will I gain from the Top Grading, I will die one day”. But then I said to myself, I worked hard for this grade, I gave my time and energy for this place and now I have to accept the lower grading??!!

Then I went to the big people and told them about it.

You know I think it’s a useless case. Honestly I am tired of this place; the only thing that makes me stay here is my parent’s house mortgage - as I don’t want
it to be closed. If I am getting nothing in my own country I might as well get nothing outside. The problem is that people here won’t change, and they will continue to give more power to Expatriates cuz they don’t trust their own people.

All people in my age would rather leave their country and be somewhere else. We need someone to hear us. One day I dreamt that I am screaming “help” to my Omani boss and the Expatriate boss was laughing at me (it was some nightmare) …I know I am quite capable of so many things. People tell me to get married and have kids and settle. Surprisingly this is not what is happening nowadays. In today’s life people those who get married and have kids won’t settle down, they
will need to get a second job to be able to live. Life is more expensive; women who get married now need at least a salary of 1000 OMR to be able to spend over their kids.

I am single and live alone, I have no responsibilities whatsoever except going to work. However, my salary is not enough when I have to pay the bills and put food on the table, how about if I got married and have kids. It’s a disaster.

P.S: the Expatriate manager takes (big amount) salary and still wears cheap everyday same clothes for the last 10 years - (so disgusting and out of fashion too).

M- as I said it’s a useless case.

Don’t ever think that it will change and people will start appreciating you or sponsoring your book, unless you write a book about how great they are (smiling caricature). Please write about me and all the young people in Oman who can’t scream “help” - not even in a nightmare!

D.3. 3 – Do Not SMS me!

The SMS was just a one-liner – Do not SMS me! I am not interested in what you think! – this is from The British Manager who wanted to terminate an Omani Engineer on flimsy grounds – and I as The Human Resources Manager had refused.

And what was my crime? Sending him a Christmas Greeting with some nice sayings inside. I did not make up those sayings – I just forwarded them to him!

Another one was also from a British Manager – Please remove me from your Emailing List – I and him too had clashed before by his impudent, rude and condescending demeaning attitude towards me).

D.3. 5 – Me – I Love You Too Much!

This was told to a British Lady who decided to wear bikini and go swimming in a desert staff camp location. This is not a hotel or resort – where there is more privacy! This desert location had people that never saw a woman for some of them for at least 3 to 4 weeks, some even longer to 2 to 3 month’s durations!

When a Bedouin tribesman from the desert is highly aroused, do not blame him to use his maximum English vocabulary to say how much he loves you – it is not love but something else! She and her husband file a case, the man is arrested.

That is the Omani culture, customs, traditions and heritage to protect and make guests feel welcome and safe. But thanks to human kindness and good nature – my boss a British drops the case – and the man is just reprimanded. The man cries – why are you arresting me? When I saw her, I just fell in love! I have never seen a woman in bikini ever before – this is why I go crazy! But I did not touch her. I asked her if she love me also?

Love takes a twisted turn when you are sex starved and hungry. It is not
your head that is talking here – it is something else!

D.3. 6 – The Job Interview in Dubai!

It was a friend who had contacted me. Are you looking for a job in Dubai? I replied I do not mind – it will depend on the job offer. So he tells me! A friend of his brother (British) who worked with him before has got a new job as Adviser to the owner – an Indian Oil company.

They are looking to replace ‘The current Indian Mafia’ (let alone the Company is Indian – including the Top Management). But this Advisor wants to change things – and bring in new blood and outsiders into the system. So I go for the interview.

The man talks big – of changing in things etc. He wants me to be part of the team. The Interview started off badly – after I had asked an innocent question. The question was – why is the Head Office in Dubai – if the Company is in Oman? I think a Professional and Expert would not take the question in wrongly – but he did! He told me sharply and crudely – if you want a job in Oman, then we end the
interview now!

I must admit this. I have never been so humiliated and insulted in an interview before like this – especially five minutes after it had started. But my culture and customs kick in – I remain polite. I must admit I need the job.

The interview is at a hotel. Lots of girls that looked decent but could otherwise be different, come in and out! He is more interested in them than in the interview – not like his Assistant who is more professional (also British). All this time I am controlling myself.

The urge to stand up and cancel is too strong – but my stomach advises me to ‘bear and grin it’ – we need the food – it pleads!

He then abruptly sits up. Did you have your breakfast? I said Yes Thank You
(they booked for me a hotel room). Then he says – you know I said to (my friend) that if (me) scr…d this up, his head would be on a platter to the chairman. I am not too sure you want a job in Dubai, but we shall let you know. I need to have my
breakfast now.

I came to know later that his wife is in Muscat with a good job. She did not join him in Dubai. Could explain a lot of things. Three months later there was still no response. I gather they found someone else … and a more keener guy to work in Dubai. This after the economic downturn that hit Dubai the most …. As in C Series articles to come!

D.3. 7 – Added Charge To The Bill!

I will not say which bill, because I still need the service from that centre!

Suffice to say the extra charge was made by an Indian Accountant AFTER the Invoice was made – and I had queried the legitimacy of some charges. Then he added in – you know they forgot to add this element!

My mistaking for having the audacity of raising my voice, and querying things.

I am sure he was chuckling to himself – another one has hit the dust! But the question should be – Till When this situation will continue? Till everyone has lost, and a good thing has gone to waste by such weird and crude behaviours? I ask the question again – in this my book!

Thus The Book – A Cry For Help! Please read it together with Psychology of Arab Management Thinking – my First Management Book.
